STEM Summer Camp at Poly Ed
All sessions run Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 3:30 pm.
Each week is open to students grades 4-8 (in the 2018-2019 school year), with exceptions made for advanced younger students.

Robotics with Lego and Arduino
Can’t get enough robotics? Do you have experience with technologies like Mindstorms and Scratch, and are you ready for a new challenge? Perhaps you’re a newcomer who would like to delve deep into the world of thinking machines? Join us for a week of robotics and programming. Our younger students will work with the Lego EV3 robotics platform, commonly seen in competitions like the International First Lego Robotics competition. The EV3’s unique programming language and array of sensors offer the perfect platform for both newcomers and young veterans. Arduino is a popular, open-source microcontroller and programming language. Flexible and powerful, Arduino is used all the way up through college and even into professional electronics prototyping. We’ll learn to control a variety of sensors and actuators that underpin our increasingly-robotic world. Additionally, we will design and 3D-print custom robotic parts for our creations. Join us, and build the future robotic overlords!
Math and Engineering
If mathematics is the music of reason, then engineering is the performance of that music. In this course, we will focus on the engineering, and the application of math you might already know! Many people wait until high school or even college before seeing math applied to engineering problems in the real world. We will jump into important equations in structural engineering, aeronautics, astronomy, and other fields to see just how thoroughly math underpins our modern world. Let’s solve some math problems posed by the universe itself!
Algorithms in Scratch and Python
Whether you’re new to Scratch, or a Scratch master with a portfolio of games, you’ll want to join us for a week of algorithms and computer science in Scratch! Scratch is not only a great gateway into the world of programming, but also a powerful prototyping tool. In this session we will discuss many of the algorithms that run our digital world. We will also introduce Python, a powerful scripting language that has become ubiquitous in science, engineering, mathematics, finance, and many other fields. Topics will include RSA encryption, sorting algorithms, sound processing, and algorithmic complexity. Jump right into the core of computer science!
July 2-6, OFF July 4
As always, our enrollment ages/grades are flexible, so if you believe your student belongs in a different age group, please let us know.
Students should bring a NUT-FREE lunch and snack. Students will have access to a refrigerator to store their lunches.
We are currently building a fantastic schedule of trips in and around NYC that mesh closely with our curriculum. Details will be finalized closer to the start of camp. Our destinations will include institutions involved in research and development, in addition to museums that align with our STEM themes.
A typical day’s schedule is as follows:
9:00 am – 11:30 am Classroom lesson and work time
11:30 am – 12:00 pm Play a game as a class or in groups
12:00 pm – 12:45 pm Lunch in Central Park
12:45 pm – 3:15 pm Field Trip
Our lab classroom includes a 3D printer, laser cutter, many robots, and a huge library of modern board games. Call us at (646) 692-3573 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to make an appointment to visit!
