If math class at school leaves you wanting more, join our team math circle! Math circle will delve deep into problem solving techniques. We will study that many approaches can be used to solve one problem. Our goal is to find the creative side of problem solving. We will approach unusual topics and difficult problems with the philosophy that not every path to an answer is clear at the beginning. Topics will include modular arithmetic, base arithmetic, unusual geometry, properties of prime numbers, and many other diverse lines of inquiry. The “team” part means that we will compete in a number of problem solving competitions, including the Math Olympiads (MOEMS), the AMC8 and AMC10, and Purple Comet! Math Meet.
In addition to pure mathematics, both classes will explore a number of programming topics in Scratch and Arduino C that relate to our studies. Our grades 2-3 class will delve into Lego EV3 robotics and examine the ways robots are the mechanical realization of algorithms and mathematical concepts. Our grades 4-5 class will use Arduino to explore microcontroller applications of such topics as modular arithmetic and prime number theory. Both classes will of course have access to our 3D printer and huge board game collection!.
Two separate math circles for grades 3-4 will meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4:00 – 5:10 pm.
Two separate math circles for grades 5-6 will meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5:20 – 6:40 pm.
Placement is generally determined by grade, but our age groups are flexible and can be suited to the experience of the student. We would be happy to discuss your child’s ideal level and find the right fit.
